One of the most common mistakes when purchasing a stabilizer or transformer is miscalculating the KVA (Kilo-Volt-Ampere) rating. An undersized unit will trip frequently and overheat, while an oversized unit is an unnecessary capital expense. The Formula: Understanding KW vs. KVA

Most industrial equipment is rated in Kilowatts (KW), but stabilizers are rated in KVA. To convert KW to KVA, you must divide by the Power Factor (PF), typically 0.8 for industrial motors. For example, a 80KW load at a 0.8 PF requires a 100KVA stabilizer. However, you cannot stop there. You must also account for the 'Inrush Current.' When a motor starts, it can draw 3 to 5 times its running current. If your stabilizer isn't sized to handle this 'starting surge,' it will fail immediately.
